Big two clash as ISL ball rolls
Pragmatism was the guiding principle of Atletico’s triumphant run last season
Chennai: The team that won the inaugural Indian Super League and the team that should have won it will usher in the second season at the Nehru Stadium here on Saturday. That the Atletico de Kolkata-Chennaiyin FC match would be preceded by a ritzy opening ceremony is par for the course. What fans would be looking forward to is the 90-minute show in which 22 guys chase a spherical object.
Pragmatism was the guiding principle of Atletico’s triumphant run last season. Their coach Antonio Lopez Habas made it clear on Friday that the ISL wasn’t a beauty contest for Kolkata. For him, the end is more important than the means. When the Spaniard was reminded of his team’s shyness in front of goal, he shot back: “But we won the title.”
The combative Atletico coach, who wouldn’t look out of place on the corner of a heavyweight boxer, said his team were reluctant to call themselves defending champions. “Past is past. We are only interested in three points in the next match,” he added.
