University panels await CM’s nod as Hyderabad High Court's deadline nears

Key appointments to universities in Telangana State are in a limbo
Hyderabad: Key appointments to universities in Telangana State are in a limbo in the absence of a green signal from Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao. The government has finalised the search committees tasked with selection of a panel of suitors for Vice-Chancellors for all the state universities and is awaiting the Chief Minister’s nod.
It is just a month before the three-month deadline set by the Hyderabad High Court to fill the vacant V-C posts in state universities.
Sources in the TS education ministry said that names of persons to serve on the search committee for each of the university have been finalised, and after the nod from the Chief Minister, this would be officially notified.
The files had been sent to the CMO quite a while ago, but even top officials are clueless when the search committees would be officially appointed. Once the search committee is officially notified, about a fortnight has to be given to call for applications or search for persons eligible for the role.
It however is unlikely the Chief Minister will look into the issue before the completion of the current session of the Legislative Assembly and Council. Under the circumstances, it would be difficult to to stick to the High Court deadline.
The TS government had cleared the biggest hurdle in the process, and amended the Universities Act in September, empowering itself to directly appoint a V-C from the panel of names suggested by the search committee. Deputy CM Kadiam Srihari has been saying it would take three months to fill the critical posts in the varsities each time he is asked about it.
