Police teams were actively following up various leads after gangs committed a series of such incidents
Hyderabad: Police are on the hot trail of two gangs of chain-snatchers while five criminals engaged in the act were arrested here Friday. Police recovered one kilo of snatched gold ornaments from the arrested, and said men from Maharashtra’s Jalgaon and Aurangabad, as also outlaws from Hyderabad are involved in the series of chain-snatching incidents in the city.
Police teams were actively following up various leads after gangs committed a series of such incidents here in the past three days.
Senior police officials said efforts were on to arrest more members of these gangs. Maharashtra gang members used to come here and stay in a Hyderabad gang-member's house, commit chain-snatchings and leave the place, Hyderabad police commissioner M. Mahender Reddy said. “While one gang led by Mohammed Rasheed Khan from Peerzadiguda committed 19 snatchings, the second gang led by Mir Ayan Ali from Jalgaon in Maharashtra committed 11 snatchings in the city.”
Special team at work to tackle chain snatching:
Special teams of the city police are at work to tackle the chain-snatching menace that has taken a serious turn of late. Police has formed a WhatsApp group for internal communication of the special team so as to expedite investigations. Stating this, Hydera-bad police commissioner Mahender Reddy said here on Friday that there however was a decrease of 50 per cent chain snatching cases in the city this year, as compared to the past two years.
“We realise that chain snatching is not just a normal offence. It not only leads to loss of valuables but also heightens fear among women. We also know that the victims undergo a period of trauma after they were targeted. In order to ensure their safety, we are making special efforts to bust the gangs,” Mr Reddy said. Hesaid the police is improving the internal communication system
of different wings including the traffic police for more effective measures against chain-snatching.
"It takes some time for victims to approach the police after an offence is committed. By then, the culprit would have made good his escape. It thus poses a challenge to chase down these men. Fake number plates used by the offenders formed another challenge. We will be coordinating with various departments including RTA in order to tackle the fake number plate problem," he said.
The commissioner said the police would also compile a database of chain-snatchers by taking inputs from other districts and neighbouring states so as to tighten the vigil on them. Meanwhile, police declared Rs 50,000 reward for those who provide information on chain-snatchers who struck at Jubilee Hills two days ago.
