Wayanad labour protest escalates

KALPETTA: The plantation workers from the tea sector of Wayanad have intensified agitations at various plantations in the district on Thursday as part of the indefinite strike demanding increase in wages and distribution of 20 percent bonus.
The agitation was a sequel to the recent agitation by women workers in Munnar. The strike was complete in the four plantations of Harrison Malayalam limited which is the biggest among the plantations in the district.
At Chundel, the striking workers conducted a protest march and a public meeting. A Pozhuthana near Vythiri, workers held a blockade on the road.
At Chooralmala, plantation labourers affiliated to CITU organized a sit-in in front of the tea factory. Hundreds of workers marched to the offices of Sentinel Rock, Achur and Arappatta estates of HML.
CITU leader P Gagarin told DC that the intensity of the agitation was going up day by day. Unity has been achieved gradually among the trade unions of different political streams and apart from a few estates all unions have joined hands for the agitation, he added.
