Telangana: Adjournment angers parties

Shocked, Opposition stages protest
Hyderabad: The Telangana Legislative Assembly was adjourned till October 5 as the Opposition stalled proceedings on Thursday to seek clarifications from the government on farmers’ suicides.
The adjournment, within 15 minutes of commencement of the House by Speaker S. Madhusudhana Chary, shocked and angered the Opposition, whose MLAs staged a sit-in on the road in front of the Assembly. Policemen had to bodily lift the MLAs into vehicles and remove them.
Usually, the Speaker adjourns the House twice or thrice for short durations and seeks the opinion of floor leaders to end the stalemate before adjourning for the day.
On Thursday, the Speaker took up Question Hour as the House met even as Congress and TD members stormed the podium, demanding a debate on farmers’ issues.
However, he rejected their demand, saying that the debate had been held for two days and had concluded with the government’s reply on Wednesday.
While minister Tummala Nageshwara Rao was replying to a query by TRS member Konda Surekha, Opposition members in the well started raising slogans and the Speaker adjourned the House till Monday, the next working day, as the protesting members did not relent.
Leaders unite for farmers’ sake
The Opposition on Thursday came on one platform to demand the TRS government immediately implement the plan for one-time settlement of farmer loan waiver up to '1 lakh instead of in instalments, besides other concrete measure to rescue farmers.
Congress, Telugu Desam, BJP, CPI, CPM and YSRC legislators led by K. Jana Reddy, Uttam Kumar Reddy, G. Kishan Reddy, K. Laxman and K.P. Vivekanand Goud and others lashed out at the government for abruptly adjourning the Assembly within 10 minutes, till Monday.
They staged a dharna in front of the Assembly after the House was adjourned on Thursday, creating traffic chaos for some time.
Many Opposition leaders were taken into custody by the police and taken to the Nampally police station, and later released.
