Coimbatore: In a disturbing trend, Tamil Nadu tops — is seen to be next only to Uttar Pradesh — in crimes against elderly people as more number of senior citizens were murdered in the state in 2014. An alarming 173 senior citizens above 60 years, including 100 men and 73 women, were murdered in Tamil Nadu in 2014. Uttar Pradesh was only marginally worse with 174 senior citizens losing their lives. These two states are closely followed by Maharashtra, where 170 senior citizens became victims of murder last year.
Contrary to the general perception that Tamil Nadu is a safe haven for senior citizens, the state has also recorded 64 incidents of attempt-to-murder cases, which is the highest in the country.
