Ponpilai Orumai activists intensify Munnar stir

Plantation Labour Committee scheduled to meet on Oct 5
Kochi: The Ponpilai Orumai women workers’ movement further consolidated its hold over the women employees of Kanan Devan Hills Plantation company in Munnar even as the workers’ stir for higher wages intensified across plantations in Kerala.
More than 1,000 women members of Ponpilai Orumai staged a sit-in in Munnar town as part of the agitation.
They outnumbered the participants in the demonstration organized by the recognized trade unions.
However, the movement called off its plans to go in for a day-and-night sit-in as the police made it clear that they will not be able to provide adequate security for the agitators.
Therefore, they would stage demonstrations from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Friday.
The members of the trade unions, who had attacked the women workers on Wednesday, ensured that the day went of peacefully.
The police, on their part, deployed more personnel to prevent a repetition of the previous day’s events.
Meanwhile, the employees’ strike intensified in plantations in Kollam, Idukki, Palakkad and Wayanad districts.
The agitators who were conducting peaceful demonstrations till Wednesday started blocking roads in many parts of the state in an effort to bring more pressure on the government to make an effective intervention.
The statutory Plantation Labour Committee is scheduled to meet on October 5 to consider their demand to raise their daily wages from Rs 232 to Rs 500.
