More staff for cancer centre

Chief Minister Chandy promises five additional posts
KOZHIKODE: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has promised to sanction five posts for the cancer centre at Thengilak-adavu at Mavoor as an annexure to the Medical College Hospital.
Speaking after laying the foundation stone for the tertiary cancer care centre at Medical College Hospital on Thursday, he said that cancer treatment in Malabar had a long way to go.
“The government is planning to elevate the status of RCC, Thiruvananthapuram, and the cancer-cum-research centre in Kochi. Similarly, Malabar is being given serious consideration in the form of a tertiary care centre,” he said.
Chief Minister Chandy rued that the prices of cancer drugs were shooting up and added the government would curb the rising prices.
Dr Fathima had donated seven acres of land and a building to the government to set up a full-fledged cancer care centre some eight years ago at Thengilkadavu.
But nothing has progressed since then. Though Medical College Hospital authorities had come forward to make it a cancer treatment centre, the non-sanctioning of posts was the main hindrance.
Social justice minister M.K. Muneer, M.K. Raghavan MP, Mr P.T.A. Raheem MLA and MCH principal Dr P.V. Narayanan among those who spoke.
