CM Oommen Chandy dedicates botanical garden, lays stone for aquatic biopark

KOZHIKODE: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy declared Olavanna Malabar Botanical Garden as a research development centre for the Kerala State Council for Science and Technology on Thursday.
During the same function, the CM also laid the foundation for the Malabar aquatic biopark project at the botanical garden.
“The research centre that is going to be beneficial for students as well as scientists will be sanctioned Rs 3 crore during the budget for its activities”, said the CM.
He also sanctioned Rs 50 lakh for the renovation of the road to the botanical garden. The Malabar Aquatic Biopark project will be functioning as part of the institute.
The CM also unveiled the introduction of Rural Empowerment thro-ugh Technology Intervention during the function.
The botanical garden is spread over 40 acres of land and started its functioning around 17 years ago. It will be known as the Malabar Botanical Garden and Institute for Plant Science.
The garden will take initiatives to reintroduce different varieties of rare plants to their natural environment through diverse methods.
The eco system service facilities used for the process were also inaugurated on the occasion. The institute will function as a centre disseminating knowledge on various facts of plant science, conservation and research on the aquatic plant diversity and protection of endangered plants in Malabar region.
