Adithi’s father, a grief struck C. Srinivas, identified the heavily decomposed body
She had gone missing from the HB Colony area in Vizag.
Visakhapatnam: The body of six-year-old C. Sai Lavanya Adithi, who had been missing since September 24, washed up at Dibbalapalem beach under Bhogapuram mandal in Vizianagaram district on Thursday evening.
Adithi’s father, a grief struck C. Srinivas, identified the heavily decomposed body. She had gone missing from the HB Colony area in Vizag.
Adithi had been sucked into an open stormwater drain at HB Colony following heavy rains on September 24 at around 6 pm while returning from her tuition classes and was swept into the sea thanks to a strong rip current.
Her body was found in a decomposed state at around 6.30 pm by the locals at Dibbalapalem, nearly 40 km from the spot where she had gone missing.
Police said that the girl would have died within minutes after being sucked into the drain.
Mr Srinivas sobbed inconsolably seconds after recognising his daughter’s body. An autopsy will be conducted at KG Hospital in Vizag on Friday.
Body may have reached shore on Wednesday
Diving experts from the Indian Navy said that after being sucked into the drain, C.S.L Adithi’s body would have washed out into the sea within two hours. Due to heavy rains, the stormwater would have been flowing at high speed.
With the sea currents running at speeds of 1.5 knots, the body could have drifted approximately 40 km from the Vizag coast.
Experts said that since the southwest monsoon was receding and the northern currents were active in the Bay of Bengal, the body would have drifted towards the Vizi-anagaram coast which is to the northeast of Vizag.
“On a peninsular coast, sea currents run parallel. On an average, the sea current would be of 1 to 1.5 knots per hour and thus it would have taken around 40 to 45 hours for the body to reach that spot. In any case, it would have taken at least 72 hours for the body to bloat and then float. The body would have reached the shore on Wednesday itself but since the area is not so frequented by the public, it was not noticed,” said an Indian Navy officer.
