2 CPM leaders conspired in varsity job scam

The government also produced the mark sheet before the court
Kochi: The Crime Branch Police on Thursday submitted before Kerala High Court that two CPM leaders, who were the then syndicate members of Kerala university, had hatched a conspiracy to get jobs for party sympathisers who appeared in the exams for assistant grade vacancies.
According to the state, the written test mark of Soona Rani, an SFI leader, was 70. When the total marks were scaled down to 75 from 100, her rank reached a better position at 59 after she was generously awarded 23 marks in the interview.
As a result of the corrupt practice by the accused person, Soona Rani got selection.
Director-General of Prosecution T. Asaf Ali appearing for the state submitted that the selection of candidates was tainted with political favouritism and nepotism.
The Crime Branch also submitted that the OMR answer sheets which were in the custody of the university were mysteriously missing.
Mr P. Gopakumaran Nair, DySP, CBCID, submitted that candidates who secured high marks in the written examination were given very poor marks in the interview and those who got low marks in the written examinations were pushed up within the range of selection by awarding high marks in the interview.
The government also produced the mark sheet before the court. According to the state, the assistant grade appointment scam is a Kerala version of the Vyapam scam.
The petitions filed by former syndicate members A.A. Rasheed, B.S. Rajeev, K.A. Andrews and M.P. Russel seeking to quash all further proceedings pending before Enquiry Commission and Special Judge, Thiruvananthapuram, are pending before the court. Former VC M.K.
Ramachandran Nair, PVC V. Jayaprakash and former registrar K.A. Hashim also are accused in the case.
The prosecution case is that the first accused, the then Vice- Chancellor, second accused, the then Pro-Vice- Chancellor and the petitioner, who was the secretary of the interview board, had conspired to appoint candidates of their own choice.
