T Nagar flyover extension in two phases
Chennai: The Chennai corporation will spend a whopping Rs 290.99 crore to extend the T. Nagar flyover in two phases, the council has resolved. The local body has been drawing up plans to link Anna Salai with Mahalingapuram by extending the Usman Road flyover on both sides. As reported by DC earlier this month, the corporation approved these plans at a great cost to the exchequer in what Mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy termed a breakthrough project.
“The travel time from Anna Salai to Mahalingapuram when the project is complete will be just two minutes,” the Mayor said. In the first phase, the flyover will extend on the south side to connect South West Boag Road junction and this includes construction of three pedestrian subways. The second phase will see the north side of the flyover extend to connect Habibullah Road, which will also include construction of pedestrian walkways under the flyover, as per the corporation’s NMT policy. Interestingly, the cost of both project phases is pegged at Rs 79.56 crore while land acquisition will cost the corporation Rs 171.19 crore. Cost of phase one is pegged at Rs 245.03 crore and phase two at Rs 45.96 crore.
The corporation also estimated the costs involved in constructing a multi-level parking on Uthamar Gandhi Salai at Nungambakkam at Rs 9.99 crore. A stakeholder meet held in February 2015 resulted in overwhelming approval of the corporation’s parking project from the residents.
The parking facility is proposed to hold 192 cars and 160 two-wheelers. While it was earlier suggested that the funds would be drawn from TNUIFSL, the corporation has decided to draw the money from its capital works funds. The multi-level parking lot will also be home to the corporation’s zone-IX office.
