MP Vinod Kumar backs police reforms in Telangana
Hyderabad: TRS Deputy Floor leader in the Lok Sabha B. Vinod Kumar has sought reforms in Telangana State police setup and implementation of the Supreme Court directive to implement recommendation made by various committees to check “allegations of corruption, inefficiency and citizen harassment.”
The MP has dashed off a letter to home minister Nayani Narasimha Reddy, requesting a Model Police Bill be tabled in the Assembly.
The Centre appointed the National Police commission in 1979, the Riberio Committee in 1998, the Padmanabhaiah Committee in 2000 and Soli Sorabjee Committee in 2006, but the recommendations of these panels were not implemented in toto.
“There have been several attempts to deal with this problem. It is unfortunate that no state government took any action whatsoever on these recommendations. This prompted the Supreme Court, in its 2006 Prakash Singh judgement to order the States to implement six directives, either through executive orders or legislation, which could kick start the reform process. Sadly, no state has implemented these directives till date, despite reminders from the SC,” Mr Kumar said.
