Daily calcium tablet intake may increase risk of stomach upsets and heart problems

Increased calcium intake isn't effective enough to prevent bone fractures

If you have been taking calcium supplements regularly for bone health, you may need to pause and rethink. Experts now warn that increasing calcium intake, either through diet or supplements, does not make you less likely to suffer from bone fractures.

The research team, from the University of Auckland in New Zealand, examined dozens of clinical trials connected to increasing calcium intake for people over the age of 50, either by tablets or dietary changes. The results showed that bone mineral density could increase by up to 2 per cent as a result but this wasn’t effective enough to prevent broken bones.

These findings have been published in the British Medical Journal, according to a report in the Daily Mail.
