National Institute of Technology panel to decide on weightage

The NIT Council meets in NIT Warangal on Thursday

Hyderabad: The NIT Council, chaired by Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani, is likely to take a final decision on scrapping the 40 per cent weightage of Class XII marks in calculating JEE Main ranks. The NIT Council meets in NIT Warangal on Thursday.

Sources said while it is most likely that the 40 per cent weightage will be scrapped, what is not clear is as to from which year this would be done.

An NIT director participating in the meeting on October 1 said the recent Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling process for admission to NITs and IITs will be discussed.

Discussions will be held on the issue of 40 per cent weightage of Class XII marks in deciding JEE Main ranks. The last meeting of NIT Council noted that the wait for the Class XII board exam marks from all states had delayed the counselling process. A committee formed by the Union HRD Ministry had suggested scrapping of the weightage.

Another source said that the scrapping is certain but discussions are only as regards the year from which this is to be scrapped. ?They are discussing from which year the weightage should be done. Whether it is net year itself or later,? a source said.

However, another NIT director who is a part of the committee on weightage said, ?We can?t say whether it will be scrapped because there are other committees also on this issue. Their suggestions will also be taken into consideration.?
