House panel probe is must to prevent crisis: Congress
Shabbir Ali demanded constitution of a House panel to probe suicides by farmers
Hyderabad: Leader of Opposition in Legislative Council Shabbir Ali on Tuesday demanded constitution of a House panel to probe suicides by farmers and suggest measures to prevent an agrarian crisis in the coming years. Initiating the debate on farmers' suicide in the Council on Tuesday, Mr Shabbir Ali said that there has been confusion over exact number of suicides due to farm-related reasons since the formation of Telangana.
Therefore, based on FIRs, all cases of farmers’ suicide should be reinvestigated so as to get the exact statistics. He made it clear that the Congress never indulged in politics over dead bodies, and would support the state government in all its initiatives to help farmers and families of those who committed suicide.
Mr Shabbir Ali said that the state government awoke from its slumber after 16 months and over 1,500 deaths and enhanced compensation from Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 6 lakh. He slammed Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao for the neglect of farmers, saying that except for an inaugural meeting of State Level Bankers Committee on June 4, 2014, the CM did not attend any of the seven SLBC meetings thereafter.
