Heroin smuggling: Main accused taken into custody

The Excise department had issued lookout notices against them
KOCHI: A special squad of the Excise Enforcement and Anti-Narcotic section has taken into custody K. Ibrahim, the main accused in bringing 1.5 kg heroin for smuggling to Kuwait.
Ibrahim, 28 was arrested on Monday night while he was returning after holding discussions with a lawyer. He was planning to surrender as the sessions court in Ernakulam had rejected his petition for anticipatory bail.
Ibrahim has been suspected as the person controlling trans-border trade of the contraband. He was hiding since July along with his driver Sinto and Ulladathu Muhammed Amin, another member of the gang.
The Excise department had issued lookout notices against them. According to TS Sasikumar, circle inspector Excise Enforcement and Anti-Narcotic Squad Ibrahim worked in Kuwait for nearly three years under Basheer, his paternal uncle.
The department suspects Basheer, having a catering business in Kuwait, was involved in the drug cartel.
Excise officials also said that they have gained definite leads about the movement of Sinto.
Sinto is suspected to be hiding somewhere in the interiors of Maharashtra. Sinto shifted from Bengaluru after officials traced his hideout in that city.
According to excise officials Ibrahim and his associates employed nearly 30 youths in Kochi for the purpose of drug trafficking.
A local court remanded him to custody. The excise department will move an application seeking his custody for detailed interrogation soon.
