Experts lay stress on significance of Ayurveda
Herbal medicines get well accepted and assimilated and do not cause any harm
Srirangam: Eminent Ayurvedic expert Dr S. Swaminathan said that Ayurveda was gaining momentum now due to its importance in detoxifying the human system rather then attempting to suppress the illness.
Inaugurating a two day national seminar on Herbal Focus 2015 - Recent trends in standardisation and biological evaluation of plant drugs, organised by the department of life sciences, Srimad Andavan Arts and Science college (SAASC) here on Tuesday, Dr Swaminathan who is also dean, Professor and Head Department of Sanskrit, Siddhanta and Samhitha, Sri Jeyendra Saraswathi Ayurveda college and hospital, Chennai, pointed out that Ayurveda is focussed in areas of food, activity and medicine as it strongly believes that the human gut is more specific in accommodating a food according to its genetic
coding.
He said that it is normally believed that herbal medicine takes time to cure a disease when compared to the allopathic system. Any drug that acts fast would help a person recover from physical ailments but it could also alter the bio chemical complex on exceeding the limit of the drug.
He said that herbal medicines get well accepted and assimilated and do not cause any harm. It is time now for the medical world to propagate the importance and efficacy of the herbal system across the globe with more advanced research programmes, he added.
In his address, Dr S Subramanian, Associate Professor, Department of biochemistry, University of Madras, said that our forefathers recommended medicinal plants abundantly found in nature. However, a few medicinal plants alone have received scientific or medicinal scrutiny and WHO has recommended that traditional medicinal plants warrant systamatic scientific evaluation before the use of plant extracts or its active principle for treatment, he added.
In her address, college principal Dr J. Radhika pointed out that since 2004, SAASC has been conducting similar seminars on specific areas with an objective to spread the importance of herbal values among students.
