Dustbins disappear, garbage piles up on roads

Residents claim the Coimbatore corporation sanitary workers have removed the two bins
Garbage hillocks dot Krishnasamy Nagar in Ramanathapuram as some waste bins have suddenly vanished from the prime locality in Coimbatore. Rubbish heaps streak across the Krishnasamy Nagar in Ramanathapuram where three dumper placer bins of 2-tonne capacity have disappeared.
Residents claim the Coimbatore corporation sanitary workers have removed the two bins. Another bin is broken and lies as a heap of trash. Dogs rummage the garbage and scatter them all over the streets.
“More than 100 families reside in Krishnasamy Nagar. But the corporation placed only 3 dumper placer bins in the 50-feet-road near Ramanathapurum. It is not sufficient for the garbage collection, while this area needs more than 5 bins. Meanwhile, the corporation workers have removed two bins,” laments Manoj resident of Ramanathapurum.
“Roadside shops dispose the food waste in dumper placer bin, which cause unbearable stink. The corporation should take action against these roadside food vendors,” he added.
Compounding their woes, there is a 4-acre vacant land overgrown with bushes and gives shelters to poisonous snakes. The stagnant water has become a breeding place for dengue mosquitoes. And worse still, it has turned into a den for anti-social elements at nights, rues R.Ragupathi, a resident of Pankaja Mill road.
“We have sent many representations to the corporation to clear bushes from the vacant land, but our requests have fallen on deaf ears. When we contacted the corporation officials, they said that the lands belong to realtors, we can’t clear bushes without the land owners’ permission,” he added.
When contacted, the ward 67 councillor M. Malarvizhi said the three dumper placer bins were damaged. “I have initiated the process to replace these bins. In the first phase, the corporation workers have removed two damaged bins. Next week, we will get new bins. I have already written a letter to the corporation to remove the bushes on the vacant land.”
