Doing our best, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh tell court
13 farmers had committed suicide the day after the announcement of increasing the compensation was made
Hyderabad: Counsel for TS submitted that the government had been implementing several welfare schemes for farmers and it had also increased the ex-gratia from Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 6 lakh for families of farmers who committed suicide due to financial distress.
Mr Balaji, counsel for the petitioner, told the court that 13 farmers had committed suicide the day after the announcement of increasing the compensation was made. The Bench asked the government counsel that if welfare schemes were reaching the farmers, why were they still killing themselves? Paying compensation was not a permanent solution, it said, adding that the root cause of the problem had to be ascertained. AP’s advocate-general submitted his government had initiated measures to prevent farmers’ suicides.
