CM Oommen Chandy to open tertiary cancer centre scheme

The ground floor will have chemo day care, administration section and lab

KOZHIKODE: The much-awaited tertiary cancer centre scheme at the Medical College Hospital here will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Wednesday.

The centre located on the 1.5- acres of land is adjacent to the chest hospital. Of the total Rs 44.5 crore set apart for the scheme, the first instalment of Rs 25.03 crore has been handed over.

The fund is earmarked to purchase linear accelerators with all accessories with a ceiling price of Rs.17 crore; two modular theatres for Rs. 2 crore each; CT scan stimulator for Rs.6 crore and SPECT Gamma Camera accessories for Rs 4 crore.

Besides, chemotherapy day care equipment, surgical oncology equipment, fully automated biochemical analyser and radiation physics law equipment will be purchased. The tender has been ready for buying the SPECT Gamma Camera to be installed at Savithri Babu ward.

“The building will be three-storeyed in which the base floor which keeps the linear accelerator, CT scan stimulator etc should be built under ground,” said MCH Principal Dr P.V. Narayanan.

The ground floor will have chemo day care, administration section and lab. The top floor will comprise surgical ward, counselling area, anaesthesia and post- operative wards.

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has sanctioned the grant-in-aid under the Tertiary Cancer Centre Scheme of the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS). The cancer centre is expected to cater to the people in Malabar, who now travel to the RCC in Thiruvananthapuram for treatment.
