Chengara protesters threaten suicide
Skylift ladders were brought to reach out to the trio who held their position until the revenue officials came
Thiruvananthapuram: The secretariat premises witnessed high drama as three Chengara pattayabhoomi agitators climbed up a huge tree threatening to commit suicide on Tuesday morning.
The trio came down after district collector Biju Prabhakar promised to meet their demands in three days and provide them land.
After agitating in front of the secretariat for around 750 days, the three landless, middle-aged men, identified as Sugathan, Ashokan and Kesavan, climbed up the tree around 11a.m.
The fire and rescue officials who arrived there immediately laid down air mattress and net to prevent fatalities. With this, one of the agitators wrapped a dhoti around his neck and threatened to hang himself from the tree.
Skylift ladders were brought to reach out to the trio who held their position until the revenue officials came.
Around 645 out of 1595 landless Chengara agitators were provided land on rocky terrain at Idukki by government.
They claimed they were cheated by the government as the land was unusable. The strike in front of the secretariat was staged by around 41 landless families who seek land in Thiruvananthapuram.
The cantonment police said that they had not registered any case for suicide attempt.
