Rights forum seeks cover from stray dogs
The stray dog menace was on the increase in the corporation area
KOZHIKODE: As animal lovers around the state fight against the cruelty shown towards stray dogs, a group of human rights activists on Monday protested before the district administration demanding an immediate solution to the longtime menace.
They also decided to file a writ petition in the High Court seeking an order either to the district administration or city corporation to take action to get rid of strays in city streets and public places.
The members of Human Rights Forum said the dogs had very easy access to various localities and that they were frequently attacking senior citizens and kids, mostly to snatch food.
The stray dog menace was on the increase in the corporation area and there were incidents of dogs biting schoolchildren and pedestrians, resulting in serious injuries, said a member of the group.
“We have already submitted several petitions before the corporation to take action in accordance with Kerala Municipality Act, but so far only few namesake procedures have been carried out,” he said.
The forum also pointed out that, even in the Prevention to Cruelty to Animals Act 1960, it had clearly provided provisions for tackling the increasing menace. They also highlighted the right to life under Article 21.
“It ensures an individual to live a dignified life without the fear of stray dogs,” they said. “In spite of these provisions, the corporation authorities are inactive.”
