Employees have no hope of wage demands being settled in Plantation Labour Committee meet today

KOLLAM: The labour strikes at the Ambanad and Harrisons estates in Thenmala valley have continued for the tenth day with the employees losing hope of any settlement on their wage demands in Tuesday’s Plantation Labour Committee (PLC) meeting.
There are those who work even for a monthly salary of Rs 1,000. The wages and other allowances given to the employees are as per the recommendations of the PLC.
“They are treated so badly that they are even taken in tractors if they fall ill. If such protests are settled after meeting their minimum conditions, the employers deduct money from their salaries to compensate for the loss incurred during the days of the protest,” alleged Thomaskutty of CITU at Thenmala.
“The employees have no hope of settling their demands in the PLC meeting. Even if the authorities agree on Rs 400, it is unlikely that the trade unions will agree,” he added.
All trade unions representing the rubber tapping workers of the Harrisons plantations joined the strike on Monday though it was started by the INTUC.
