Pistol found in former MP’s luggage at Chennai airport

The former DMK MP then finally left for Tuticorin after boarding the 10.40 am flight

Chennai: Former DMK MP S.R. Jayadurai, was barred from boarding a flight to Madurai from Chennai on Monday morning after he was found carrying a pistol with eight bullets in his hand luggage.

Jayadurai was supposed to board the 6.20 am flight to Madurai but was stopped while his hand baggage was being screened and the explosive alarm went off. CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) personnel immediately stopped him and after searching his luggage recovered the firearm and the bullets. He was then handed over to the airport police.

Sources at the airport said he had license for the gun and claimed that he had forgot to inform authorities about it. The police then got a written statement from him that he did it unaware and not on purpose, after which he handed over his pistol and bullets to one of his relatives from city. He was then finally let off. The former DMK MP then finally left for Tuticorin after boarding the 10.40 am flight. “People will be allowed to carry such arms only if a proper permission is obtained from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security,” airport director said.
