Kids whose fathers read to them go on to have better language skills

Dads prefer to ask abstract questions during story-telling which keeps the child interested

If you are a doting dad, you should try as much as possible to never miss a story-time session with your little one, science says. A recent study reveals that youngsters who listen to stories read aloud by men show improvement in their language skills.

Researchers at Harvard University in the US discovered that after a year of hearing stories read by their parents, the language skills of those little girls, who were read out stories by males, significantly improved. The study also found that mothers tended to ask ‘teacher-like’, factual questions like ‘How many apples do you see?’ while fathers on the other hand preferred more abstract questions, which often led to imaginative discussions.

Dr Elisabeth Duursma, who carried out the research project, said that those kids whose dads started reading to them before the age of two were hugely impacted. She will also be presenting her work at an international conference soon, according to the Daily Mail.
