Vehicles collide on airport taxiway, six hurt

Six people suffered injuries, including the two drivers (Sudhakar of Indigo and Pechiyappan of Bhadra Intl)

Chennai: In the small hours of Sunday morning an Indigo staff carrier and a mini cargo container vehicle (Bhadra Intl) collided head-on near the taxiway which is close to the runway.

Six people suffered injuries, including the two drivers (Sudhakar of Indigo and Pechiyappan of Bhadra Intl). Two among the injured, Chandra-shekhar and Manikandan were admitted to Chromepet Hospital for further treatment, while others were discharged after being provided with first aid. Sources at the airport said such incidents may be occurring because novices were being hired for such jobs and there is a need for proper background checks as to whether the people are competent enough for such responsible work as driving inside the airport.

"The vehicle driven by the Indigo carrier was on the wrong route and was carrying more number of people than allowed, with eight or nine people on board while the permit is for just five. The airport driving permit of the two drivers have been withdrawn and we are conducting further inquiries on the matter," said V.V.G. Raju, Acting Airport Director.

Flight services were not affected as the accident happened early in the morning, he added. No written complaint was filed with the airport police and investigations are being carried on the basis of an oral complaint.
