Madras High Court Lawyers to boycott courts today

Decision taken after meet in Tiruchy

Chennai: Thousands of advocates from across the state took part in a consultative meet organised by the Tiruchy bar association on Sunday after which the Madras High court Advocates Association declared a boycott of all courts on Monday.

The decision to hold the meeting was taken after the High Court registrar issued an order saying that the licence of the Madurai Bar Association would be cancelled as a result of the repeated agitation by their lawyers.

Over the past four months, lawyers from Madurai High Court have been holding protests and boycotting the court for reasons ranging from the mandatory helmet rule to the beef ban. Matters came to a head when two lawyers spearheading the protests were slapped with contempt of court notices and were asked to appear at the Madras High Court last week.

On September 23, the registrar of Madras High Court decided to withdraw the bar association's licence as it refused to accept that the unruly behaviour of the Madurai lawyers negatively affected the working of the court.

The lawyers held this meet in Tiruchy to discuss the suspension of the Madurai lawyers and also the case filed by the police against the bar association members for causing trouble on the campus.

A.K. Ramasamy, one of the lawyers charged with contempt of court said that by revoking the licence the high court is an insult to the dignity of the advocates.
