Manja thread ends kid’s life

Five-year-old riding pillion dies in front of parents

Chennai: A loose ‘manja’ thread used in flying kites slit the throat of a five-year-old boy, killing him instantaneously in front of his parents on Sunday. R. Ajay, a LKG student, was on a two-wheeler with his parents riding along the Murasoli Maran flyover in Perambur when the incident happened.

The family of four left their home in Semaathamman colony 2nd street around 1.45 pm and were on their way to a restaurant on Perambur High road, police said. The boy’s father, M. Raju alias Appu was riding the bike while his wife, R. Nirosha was riding pillion holding the couple’s three-year-old daughter, Keerthika. Ajay was seated on the fuel tank of the bike.

“It all happened in a flash. My son (Ajay) kept on talking throughout the ride and all of a sudden my husband stopped the bike. Before, we realised what was happening, blood started flowing from my kid’s soft throat,” a bereaved Nirosha said. Ajay was rushed to the nearest private hospital by his parents.

“By that time, our Ajay had already died,” said Jegan, the kid's maternal uncle. Police secured the boy's body and moved it to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital. The body is expected to be handed over to the family on Monday after post mortem. Meanwhile, irate neighbours of the family and residents of Seemathamman colony appealed to the government to act strictly on ‘manja’ thread sellers.
