Decoding Aarushi’s case
Konkona Sen Sharma talks about Talvar, the Indian judicial system, Working in South and her wish to be directed by her mother
Konkona Sen Sharma will be seen as Mrs Talvar in the upcoming film Talvar, which is based on the Aarushi case. Talking about the film, which will release on October 2, she says, “The film received a wonderful response in the Toronto Film Festival and it felt great. We are looking forward to its release now.”
The murder of Aarushi had sent the media into frenzy, and the case had culminated in her parent’s incarceration. Commenting on it, the actress says that there have always been such heinous crimes, but they are coming out in the open now due to social media.
“When such murders occur, the victim is known to the murderer. But in the film we are taking the story ahead from the investigation point of view. The two different investigation theories are being followed in the film. The audiences can debate after watching the film, we are not solving the case,” she says.
Talking about the Indian legal system, since some say that justice perhaps was not served in this particular case, the actress says, “Our legal system is surely competent enough. But in this case the Noida Police made a few mistakes…evidences were presented incorrectly and a chunk of it went missing. They were also contaminated. It is not an open and shut case, and thus it attracted so much attention.”
Konkona is usually not seen in the regular masala films of Bollywood, but that’s a choice she has made consciously. “I am grateful that I have got good work and also happy and excited that I get meaningful roles even today,” she says.
A regular in Bengali cinema, Konkona, however, is unsure about working in the South industries. “I do not know the language and that’s my only reservation. Though others have done it, I do not know whether I will be able to emote like I do in Hindi and Bengali films,” she says.
On getting offers from, Hollywood, she says, “I did get an offer a couple of years ago but it was not exciting.”
Currently she is busy writing a script. She adds, “I would love to work under the direction of my mom (actor/filmmaker Aparna Sen). And I would surely like to direct at a later stage. Currently, I am in the process of writing a script.”
