Two-member gang held for theft

They disposed of the stolen mobiles at a mobile store in Abids area for a price of Rs 3000 or more
Hyderabad: A two-member gang which stole auto-rickshaws and then used them to steal mobile phones from their passengers has been arrested by Cyberabad Police. Seven auto-rickshaws and six mobile phones totally valued at around Rs 6.6 lakh were seized from them.
Accused Syed Khaleel and Syed Khasim were residents of Borabanda area and working as drivers. Since their income could not match with their lavish expenses, they hatched a plot to drive themselves on the theft route. During the investigation, it was found the two were involved in as many as 19 thefts in the past 45 days, police said.
According to police, the duo would look around for a stationary and unmanned auto-rickshaw in some secluded place and take it away. They would drive it to different places and ferry passengers. Generally, they were game with ‘single’ passengers. When they reach a secluded place, they take the mobile phone of the passenger by giving him or her some excuse and then flee the spot, leaving the passenger and the auto rickshaw there. The passenger would be left flabbergasted, said Madhapur inspector KVL Narasimha Rao.
They disposed of the stolen mobiles at a mobile store in Abids area for a price of Rs 3000 or more. The duo did 19 such thefts, of which 12 were under Madhapur Police station, five under Jubilee Hills and one each under Gachibowli and Humayun nagar police stations.
They were arrested Friday night while they were moving around in a suspicious manner near the Sai Cell Phone Repair center in Madhapur. Police recovered seven out of the eight stolen vehicles and six out of the 11 stolen phones. The two were being produced before a court, police said.
