Meet Mr and Mrs Right

It’s hard not to be awestruck by the perfect chemistry that Nisha and Karan share

They tied the knot in 2012 after three years of dating. And while they haven’t been paired together on the small screen — except for one much appreciated stint in the couples’ dance reality show Nach Baliye — Nisha Rawal and Karan Mehra make for a most photogenic pair indeed. Karan and Nisha recently sat down for a chat with us, answering our queries (and those of their many fans) on the subject of love, romance, marriage and life! Read on…

Karan and Nisha, let’s hear our love story!
Nisha [laughs]: Over to Karan, who always likes to be the narrator!
Karan [smiles]: Well, Nisha and I met while working on the film Hastey Hastey. She was the lead actress of the film while I had been brought on board as the fashion designer for the entire cast. We soon became friends, and friendship grew into love.

Both of you are actors. So does that make you make you more critical of each other’s work?
Nisha: I am an absolutely critical person when it comes to showcasing our talent.
Karan: Yes, I think we both are.

Nisha, you’ve recently been testing your prowess as a singer. How did that come about?
Nisha: All the credit goes to my friends, the Meet Brothers. Manmeet really encouraged me to sing. We brainstormed and I was made to come up with a list of my favourite songs and then sing them. My scale was set by Manmeet and the songs are all Karan’s favourites.

Karan, are you interested in singing as well?
Karan: I do have a sense of music, but I’m not a good singer!

Okay, now each of you has to tell us about a trait of your partner’s that you really love, and another that you hate!
Nisha: I loved Karan enough to marry him! And ‘hate’ is such a strong word. I have always believed there is beauty in imperfection. We are lucky to be living this imperfect-perfection of a balanced relationship that has its little annoyances and lots of love.
Karan: Nisha is a great soul — that’s how I got attracted to her. And nothing about her annoys me — I’m sure that’s what every husband says!

Any advice that the two of you would like to give other couples, on how to keep the love alive even after several years of marriage?
Nisha: Does love die? Hope it never happens!
Karan: I think it’s a journey that comes with its fair share of twists and turns. There are times the road is smooth. There are times when it has its ups and downs. But it’s better to traverse it with that someone special rather than alone.

What’s been the most memorable date or vacation you’ve ever had?
Nisha: Of course our much awaited honeymoon, which happened eight months after we got married, thanks to Nach Baliye! [laughs]
Karan: Nisha is never satisfied! [laughs] I have loved all our vacations together.

Who among you is the bigger shopaholic?
Nisha [laughs]: It’s an insult to a girl if the guy shops more than her! I believe in keeping the tradition alive. Once we were at this shopping mall in Dubai and we bumped into a friend. He was amazed to see me walking about like a diva, followed by two larger-than-life suitcases being dragged around by Karan!
Karan: Nisha is, not me. And yes, I have to carry around her stuff all the time!

How do you deal with each other’s fans, especially the ones who flirt with your partner?
Nisha: I love all of Karan’s fans. I think flirting is like a youth potion for your heart, so keep it going!
Karan: I think it’s quite healthy and normal.
