Lives lost on state roads see rise; buses turn killer
2,132 people died and another 22,321 injured so far this year
Kochi: Despite the awareness campaign and safety measures, the road mishaps in the state are on the rise.
Against a total of 36,282 accidents recorded last year, there are already 19,939 mishaps till June 30 this year, 1,752 more than the corresponding period last year.
While 2,132 people died and another 22,321 injured so far this year, the road mishaps in the corresponding period last year resulted in the loss of 2,180 lives and 20,269 injuries, the figures released by the Kerala police said.
“The rising mishaps are a cause for worry. From 2005 onwards, the number of mishaps was on the decline for a major part till 2013. However, last year saw mishaps rising by 1,067 (compared to 2013) and the trend is continuing this year too. Like last year, two-wheelers are involved in the most number of mishap cases,” said an MVD officer.
The number of road mishaps showed a steady decline from 2006 onwards till 2012, when a slight increase was noted. However, the mishap numbers started rising alarmingly since 2014 (an increase of over 1,000 cases compared to previous year.)
The KSRTC buses have become the villains on the road with a total of 923 accidents involving them being recorded till August this year. A total of 138 people died and another 1,754 were injured in the mishaps. Two mishaps were caused by the new ‘Silver Line Jet’ services. In 2014, KSRTC buses were involved in 1,017 cases in which 195 people were killed and 1,206 injured.
