Hyderabad: Civic funds left unused

In 2014-15, 26 corporators didn’t use Rs 1 crore allotted to each of them
Hyderabad: While the city is reeling under civic woes, former corporators have left crores of rupees unused during their term.
In 2014-15, over 21 corporators did not use any of their funds, while in 2014-15, it was 26. Every corporator is allotted Rs 1 crore per year, totaling Rs 5 crore during their five-year term. The wards where funds were not spent in the last year of the term – 2014-15 – include Nacharam (where a recalcitrant drain on the main road to ECIL has been causing traffic jams for months), Hayatnagar, Karmanghat, Champapet, Saroornagar, P&T Colony, Barkas, Dattatreyanagar, Manghalhat, Tolichowki, Jambagh, Domalguda, Banjara Hills, Serilingampally, Ramachandrapuram, Kukatpally, Vivekananadnagar Colony, Hydernagar and Defence Colony. The roads in these wards are in very bad condition and all of them lack basic civic amenities.
Every corporator is limited to use Rs 1 crore for development works in a year, the elected representative should identify the works on priority basis in his or her ward, submit the plan and funds will be released for the same. The works vary from roads, sanitation, recreation centres, and water and sewerage issue. Ironically, during the elections these basic issues are on the top of the manifestos. If no plans are submitted, funds are not released and are left in the GHMC’s coffers.
