Words flow freely here
This young poetess has just launched her collection of poems that explore the mind of a teenager
Bibliophiles will agree that there’s nothing better than the scent of musty ink on yellowing or sparkling white pages. It is an even better feeling if the book you’re holding is your own. With copies of her freshly printed books tucked in her arms, 20-year-old Chandni Hemdev is headed to a meet-and-greet as she launches her collection of poems, Something Written, Yet Unwritten this week.
“Written in free verse, the poems document whatever goes on through the mind of a teenager and essentially focuses on relationships — with family, friends and your love,” says the student of media studies from CMS Jain College, who started penning down the book when she was a teen, trying to navigate the rollercoaster ride of emotions by herself. “Of course, now, it’s easy to think of it as just a ‘phase,’ but for those who are still in it, they will probably get strength and solace in reading that they are not alone,” she says about her easily relatable 27 poems. With William Wordsworth, Yeats and Robert Browning’s works screaming out to her during her literature classes in school, Chandni admits that she couldn’t stay away from poetry. “Although there’s a niche audience for it, compared to prose, poems have shorter sentences and give the essence of the subject in a shorter time,” she says, unwinding with William Shakespeare’s poetic writing whenever she finds the time.
With teens across the city rapidly taking to writing and getting published at that, ask Chandni if it’s an easy process and she is quick to retort, “It’s great to start writing when you’re really young – especially when your writing appeals to your own age group. It’s also probably the biggest milestone you’ll accomplish in so few a years.
These days, the process itself is so much easier that everyone wants to be published, but what will probably stop them is the finances.” Being one of the youngest wedding planners in the city today, Chandni probably never thought she’d be penning down her own book, but thanks to her teachers from Baldwins and Bishop Cottons’ — Miss Rozario, Dennison and Bobin, here she is already penning down her second! “It’s titled Ensemble of the Soul and deals with a soul’s perspective in dark humour,” she says, already filling it with over 30 poems.
While she hopes to fly to London to pursue her masters in literature, she is now focused on attempting to write her heart out. “I’ve also always wanted to be an RJ because I love to talk — I hope I get to host a show someday,” she says, making do with soulful music and long walks for now.
