Chennai: With elections round the corner Dravidian majors in TN are trying to reach out to youngsters. While DMK leader M. K. Stalin touring Tuticorin and Sivakasi is now taking selfies with school and college students, the AIADMK office-bearers have started targeting colleges in Anna Nagar, Arumbakkam and Aminjikarrai seeking students to join the ruling party.
PMK’s chief minister candidate Anbumani Ramadoss who is an early bird in the enrollment drive is also leaving no stone unturned and has been focusing on youngsters and students. Anbumani told DC said that he was able to connect to the youngsters very well as he belongs to the same age group. “I am the only politician from this generation whereas others are from last generation. Since I am from their age group, I was able to relate to their problem and connect with them,” he told DC. He said that his party assurance of one family one job as gone down well with youngsters.
“We are not promising any freebies but free services and creation of job opportunities. We have also promised to provide Rs 3,000 per month as assistance to those who have not any jobs even five after registering in employment exchange,” he said, adding that he is reaching out to the younger generation through social media and mobile application. “Thalapathi has been an instant hit among youngsters and we are planning for similar road shows in north chennai to woo youngsters.” said former DMK ward secretary Purushothaman.
“Our target is to rope in 2,000 college students by the end of this month. For women students, we introduce them to minister Gokula Indira and in case of young men, the enrollment is done through central Chennai MP S.R. Vijaykumar”, said MBA graduate R. Ganesh, an AIADMK students’ wing member. In Anna Nagar we have covered students from Kandasamy Naidu college and Valliammal women’s college and at present our focus is more on the first year college students as they would be voting for the ensuing 2016 assembly polls, said Ganesh.
“It’s a regular exercise that all parties do when elections are nearing but in the present scenario most of the students lack interest in politics. Only a very few of them turn for party activities even after enrollment”, said a former AIADMK legislator. Major parties still bank on their district secretaries and ward functionaries for winning Assembly polls, he opined.
