G Sudhakaran justifies CAPE move

Plan to hand over Cathlab, dialysis units to AIMS
KOCHI: Even as the Co-operative Academy for Professional Education (CAPE) reveals its inefficiency in managing the Sagara Hospital under it at Punnapra and proceeds to hand over the cathlab and dialysis units there to Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) Kochi, Mr G. Sudhakaran, CPM MLA of Ambalappuzha has justified the move but derided the MoU reached between the two in this regard.
“The MoU has been devised in such a way that the facilities and ultimately the hospital itself are completely handed over to AIMS. That cannot be allowed. I was not consulted on it. The CAPE director is responsible for it and he wants to get rid of the hospital. I have asked them to remove contentious clauses and entrust the running of the units for one or two years,” Mr Sudhakaran told DC on Thursday.
He said that he agreed with the move as otherwise the equipment that are part of the cathlab worth crores of rupees would rust there.
“It has been already rusting for the past four-and-a-half years. That shows the inefficiency of CAPE,” he said. sHe, however, did not favour a government takeover of the hospital.
“Such moves are already striking at the root of the co-operative movement in the state which has set a rare example within the country and I cannot support it,” he said and added that already the Alappuzha Medical College was in a pathetic condition.
“The private hospital, Narayana Hridayalaya, Bangalore, had a long-standing collaboration with Pariyaram Co-operative Medic-al College and then withdrew from it. Hence there is nothing wrong in the present move. The people of the area should benefit from it,” he said and added he would participate in the September 30 function to announce the tie-up to be attended by Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala only if the MoU is redrafted removing the contentious clauses.
