Convocation Dress is UGC directive, says University of Hyderabad
It also said that greater use of handloom would promote the handloom industry
Hyderabad: The University of Hyderabad on Thursday came out with a clarification on the convocation dress code.
The clarification reads, “All universities had received a communication from the UGC dated 15 July, 2015 with a request to consider using handloom fabric for ceremonial dresses prescribed for special occasions, like Convocation. Based on this the University prescribed the dress.”
The communication from UGC reads that ceremonial robes made of handloom fabrics would not only give a sense of pride of being Indian, but also prove comfortable in hot and humid weather. It also said that greater use of handloom would promote the handloom industry.
The university clarified that the angavastram, which was compulsory, would be given on hire for Rs 200 at the convocation venue and the amount would be refunded later on.
Students, however, continued their protests on Thursday against the dress code.
