Cat biriyani served at outlets on outskirts?

Chennai: When you order for a chicken biriyani or a kebab from the roadside eateries of Red hills, Avadi, Kodambakkam, Pallavaram and Kotturpuram, you may end up eating cat meat, warn residents of the area. The latest incident that came to light on this was from Pallavaram when T. Ashwath, a resident of Kodambakkam and a member of People for Cattle India (PFCI) found that around nine cats in his area went missing on September 11.
“I later found that the cats were killed and were stuffed in a cloth bag near a liquor outlet where a meat shop was running and found that the cats were the ones roaming in my neighborhood,” he said. Officials from the Food Standard and Safety Authority (FSSA) said that cat meat does not fall under the category of meat for consumption.
“Last week we found nearly 15 kittens killed and left out in a bag at Ayanavaram near a slum was to be handed over to a road-side outlet,” said Dr P. Shirani, founder of People for Animals, Chennai. Residents of Pallavaram said cat meat is sold to eatery at Rs 50 per kg.
