I’ve never felt like a newcomer: Aparna Vinod

Newbie Aparna Vinod, who has courted controversy of not ‘acknowledging’ her first director Priyanandanan, talks about her second movie Kohinoor

Even before the release of her second film Kohinoor, Aparna Vinod found herself being cut down to size by veteran director Priyanandan in whose film Njan Ninnodu Koodeyundu she made her debut. Priyanandan took to his social site to express his caustic comments on her acting skills in his film.

When contacted, Aparna as well as Priyanandan chose not to elaborate further on the issue, but Priyanandan did hint at what the matter was. “Aparna made a debut through my film, but when she became a part of a commercial film, she chose to ignore the fact that it was me who promoted her in the first place through my film though she was aware that mine was an art film.”

“I prefer to think of that as a lack of maturity from her side and don’t want to dwell more on it,” the national award-winning director said.

Leaving aside that incident and coming back to Aparna’s role in Kohinoor, she was called for audition by producer Sajin after which she landed the role.

Clearly mentioning that Kohinoor is her second film after Njan Ninnodu Koodeyundu, she talks about her role. “The film is set in the 1980s and I play the role of a traditional girl from a village who romances Asif Ali’s character in the film,” she says.

Being a period movie, she got to wear traditional davanis and sarees. Acting in a commercial film with more experienced actors, newbie Aparna did experience the jitters.

“For the first few days, I was nervous and had to do a lot of retakes, but director Vinay Govind was very cooperative and remained totally supportive. Asif is hyperactive and fun on the sets so I did not really face any big problems. Since he was the producer, he kept on reminding me that he wanted the film to run and that I better act well,” she reveals.

Aparna never felt like a newcomer on the sets. “Being the heroine, I was treated on par with an established heroine and provided food round the clock and was actually pampered on the set,” she says.

Aparna is pursuing her BSc. Psychology in Thrissur and mentions that she would like to balance her studies as well as her acting career. Asked about her favourites in the industry, she states: “I would like to act with Jayasurya in Malayalam and Dhanush in Tamil. I know Jayasurya very well and I always tell him that I would like to work with him.”

Aparna has been getting feelers from the industry and hints that an upcoming film of hers would be announced soon.
