Sister Amala murder suspect identified

The police have received clinching evidence to prove his role in the murder

Kottayam: The police have identified the person who murdered Sister Amala, 69, of the Lisieux Carmelite convent in Pala on Thursday last.

The alleged culprit is Satheesh Babu, 38, son of Balakrishnan of Kasargod district, and he is absconding.

He lived with his wife and two children in a rented house at Erattupetta, and is a member of a quotation gang.

He is also an accused in three cases in Vadakkancherry and Alappuzha, including an attempt to murder. A few months ago, he had stolen two mobile phones after attacking a nun at a convent in Bharananganam.

The police have received clinching evidence to prove his role in the murder, said district police chief Satheesh Bino.

“We had got the lead a few days ago and were verifying his links with the crime. He had communicated via a mobile SIM card which he had stolen,” Mr Bino said.

The finger prints of the accused, which were found on the walls of the convent, have been verified from the police data base.

The police cyber cell has confirmed the use of the stolen mobile phone inside the area of the tower where the convent is situated on the night of the crime.

He was also identified by the people who were present in the nearby hospital that night. He had run away from a toddy shop at Pala after the police conducted a search in the shop.

A police team led by B. Suneesh Babu, Pala DySP, has launched a manhunt for him.
