Parties: Swachh cess is dirty idea
Mobilisation of funds for the Swachch Bharat Mission was opposed by political parties
Hyderabad: The proposal of the NITI Aayog sub-committee headed by AP CM Chandrababu Naidu to collect cess for mobilisation of funds for the Swachch Bharat Mission was opposed by political parties and voluntary organisations on Wednesday.
APCC spokesperson Mr N. Tulasi Reddy said the Swachch Bharat Mission was a drama. He said that the central and state governments were already collecting taxes from the people, and collecting another cess in the name of Swachch Bharat was objectionable.
He said that it was the responsibility of the state government and local bodies to keep a city or village clean. Instead of collecting cess, he said the government should pool the required funds from various departments.
YSR Congress spokesperson Ambati Rambabu said that the TD government in the state and the NDA government at the Centre were taking anti-people decisions and burdening them.
He said when local bodies were collecting property tax from people, what was the need for an additional burden of cess. “If a person throws garbage on the street he should be punished. But why should others be punished in the guise of additional taxes,” Mr Rambabu asked.
M. Padmanabha Reddy of the Forum for Good governance said awareness, not money was the criteria for the Mission and that it should be voluntary for people to contribute for keeping cities clean.
