Panel pushes for optical mark reader answer sheets
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The committee headed by general education secretary V.S. Senthil, which conducted an inquiry into the SSLC results muddle, has recommended the introduction of optical mark reader (OMR) answer sheets for the SSLC examinations to ensure more transparency.
The other recommendations are Aadhar number- based biometric attendance system, barcode-based answer script, and bar code- based system for awarding internal marks and grace marks bar.
The new system is expected to lessen the burden on students, reduce malpractices, quicken the evaluation process and improve results.
OMR test sheets are commonly used for examinations or tests that have multiple choice or objective type questions.
Students will have to select the right answer from the choices given by shading or marking the OMR bubbles.
These sheets are scanned and then read as well as evaluated by the OMR answer sheet checker software.
In case of descriptive type questions, an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) system is used instead of OMR.
OCR is a computerised scanning system that enab-les one to scan a text document into an electronic computer file that can then be corrected using a word processor on the computer.
