Indian Union Muslim League plea against uniform civil code
KOZHIKODE: The Indian Union Muslim League will submit a memorandum to the President with one crore signatures demanding the repeal of Article 44 (Uniform Civil Code) from the Constitution.
Though the party had earlier raised the issue a few times in Parliament, this time it is pushing hard.
“The IUML national executive meet which just concluded in Chennai has taken the decision. One crore signatures will be collected country-wide on the Bakrid day and be submitted to the President,” said IUML state general secretary K.P.A Majeed.
The immediate provocation for the move is the ‘general feeling’ that Narendra Modi government has been serious about implementing the Uniform Civil Code.
“The IUML is pursuing the issue seriously,” he said. Recently, VHP leader Praveen Togadia had also demanded the strict implementation of the code after the census result was out.
IUML state president Syed Hydarali Shihab Thangal has urged all party committees to collect the signatures on the premises of mosques and Idgah on the Bakrid day.
“We aim to collect 50 lakh signatures from Kerala. After visiting the President, we will watch the situation and take follow-up actions accordingly,” said IUML state treasurer P.K.K Bava.
