Assembly lauds Jayalalithaa for ‘successful’ GIM

Resolution said the Assembly thanked and lauded Jayalalithaa for ensuring Rs 2.42 lakh crore investment
Chennai: The Assembly on Wednesday adopted a resolution lauding Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa for successfully holding Global Investors Meet even as the Opposition parties including DMK and PMK staged a walkout.
Moving a resolution in the Assembly here, leader of the House and finance minister O. Panneerselvam said the success of the two-day GIM would pave way for creating a wealthy Tamil Nadu and result in industrial revolution thereby ushering in massive changes in the livelihood of Tamils and the economy of the state.
He said that Jayalalithaa had evinced keen interest in the successful conduct of GIM, and had guided the officials with necessary inputs. As a result, the investment commitments exceeded the targeted Rs 1 lakh crore and stood at Rs 2.42 lakh crore, he said crediting Jayalalithaa for the grand success of the investors’ meet, held here on September 9 and 10.

Panneerselvam also recalled the various pro-industry efforts made by the Jayalalithaa governments since 1991, when she first came out with a new industrial policy, and said that it paved the way for industrialisation as car manufacturers, Ford and Hyundai, first set up shop here.
Earlier, DMK’s deputy floor leader Durai Murugan wanted to make some remarks on the resolution at the introductory stage itself but Speaker P. Dhanapal did not allow. After insisting on it for sometime, the DMK members staged a walkout as the Chair did not heed their demand.
Puthiya Tamizhagam leader K. Krishnasamy said there was no atmosphere to welcome the resolution and walked out. PMK and Congress members also followed suit.
MMK member Prof M.H Jawahirullah welcomed the resolution saying Jayalalaithaa had attracted an investment of Rs 2.42 lakh crore without travelling abroad.
Later, the resolution was adopted by a voice vote.
