Burglar taking 35 sovereigns of gold and Rs 3 lakh cash from the bureau
Chennai: Villagers lynched to death two of the three burglars who entered a farmer’s house in a village near Oragadam in Kancheepuram district on Wednesday. The inmates of the house woke up when a burglar, after taking 35 sovereigns of gold and Rs 3 lakh cash from the bureau, tried to cut a thaali chain of a woman.
In the melee two of the house inmates were stabbed but villagers managed to overpower two of the burglars and lynch them. Based on a driving licence found on the body, one of the deceased was identified as Periyasamy, 48, his brother Rajendran, both natives of Thirukazhukundram.
The burglar, who escaped was carrying all the valuables stolen from the house, is believed to be their sister’s husband Manickam. According to the police, burglars entered the house of Muniyandi, 70, located in Thevariyampakkam village on Kancheepuram – Tambaram road at around 3 am on Wednesday. The entry was easy for the intruders as the doors to the house was open due to the heat and absence of power.
Muniyandi, his wife Dhanalakshmi and their younger son Devasikhamani, 33, were sleeping on the ground floor while their elder son Balaraman, 45 and wife Lakshmi were sleeping on the first floor. Dhanalakshmi’s brother Krishnan and family stayed in the neighbouring house.
The burglars after taking gold and cash from the bureau had stopped to remove the chain from Dhanalakshmi’s neck when she woke up and started screaming for help. Hearing her cries Muniyandi and Devasikhamani woke and tried to overpower the intruders. In the process the burglars, who were wearing only shorts and with fully oiled body, attacked Devasikhmani with knives.
Hearing the commotion Krishnan came running and he was also stabbed. By this time other villagers, most of who were sleeping outside their homes because of power cut, came running and started chasing the burglars. The villagers chased the suspects for nearly 5 km before overpowering them. Two of them were caught while one managed to escape. The villagers thrashed the two suspects using pestle. After killing the two, the villagers arranged for an ambulance service to take Devasikhamani to Stanley Medical College Hospital in Chennai and Krishnan to Chengalpet hospital. Later they informed the police about the incident.
