Bengaluru: 12 arrested for looting upscale apartment

The case was cracked after questioning the victim’s driver

BENGALURU: Central Division police have arrested a 12-member gang in connection with a dacoity committed recently in an upscale apartment situated in Richmond Town in Ashok Nagar police station limits.

The arrested have been identified as Jishad, 28, Sahal, 20, Sameer, 25, Fairoz, 40, Santhosh, 26, Umar Khan, 29, Taufeeq, 29, Shehnaaz, 31, Siyad, 30, Basha, 39, Vinod, 31 and Shanayaaz Khan. All the gang members are said to be hailing from Kerala. Police have seized Rs 8,500 in cash, 15 mobile phones and a Mahindra jeep, which was used to commit the dacoity.

While Siyaad has cases of murder, theft, drug peddling and assault against him, Shehnaaz and Vinod have cases of robbery, murder and assault cases registered against them.

During the investigation, the police picked up the owner’s driver, who had colluded with a group of men from Kerala to commit the crime. Though they expected to loot crores of rupees from the businessman's apartment, they managed to get only about Rs 54,000 and few mobile phones, the police said.

On September 5, the accused, armed with lethal weapons, had entered the Golden Threshold Apartments by breaching the security and entered the businessman’s flat. They tied up the three members of the family and ransacked the house before fleeing away with the booty.

A police officer said that after the incident came to light, they rushed to the crime scene but failed to obtain any vital clues. Later a four-member team went to Kerala and camped there for three days. The police analyzed thousands of phone calls made from a particular tower location at the time of dacoity. They zeroed in on some numbers and cracked the crime, police added.
