Watch: Female successor must be very attractive, says Dalai Lama

The Dalai Lama has time and again described himself to be a feminist

London: In a controversial statement, the Dalai Lama has said that if there were to be a female successor to him, she should have a ''very very attractive face'' and that she wouldn't be of much use otherwise.

The Dalai Lama, who is in London for nine days to promote compassion, made the comments in an interview with BBC's Clive Myrie, on a question if there would be 15th Dalai Lama and if there was a possibility of her being a woman. “The very institution of Dalai Lama, whether it should continue or not, will be decided by the Tibetan people,” he said. “In Paris, once, a woman’s magazine reporter asked me if there was any possibility of a female Dalai Lama. I said, why not? Female has more potential biologically to show more compassion... And then I said- if a female Dalai Lama does come, her face must be very very attractive.”

When Myrie sought clarification on his remarks, asking if it was imperative for such a female Dalai Lama to have attractive facial features, the Dalai Lama replied, "Otherwise not much use."

“I hope you are joking?” Myrie is seen asking, to which the religious leader says, “It is only true.”

The Dalai Lama, who is the fourteenth spiritual leader to hold the title, has time and again described himself to be a feminist and the comments come in much contrast to his previous statement.
