This video has gone viral on social media where a transgender is seen exposing a man disguised as a hijra. The transgender is seen thrashing the man with shoe slaps while revealing to the public his true identity.
In India, the transgenders, who are better known as ‘hijras’ are not identified as people with a different sexual identity, but are strongly associated with prostitution and beggary. They are feared by men and inspire cringing responses from the women. Deep-rooted superstitions and cultural stereotypes in the country have made the transgender community one of the most exploited and vulnerable in India.
But there are people who are taking advantage of this fear that pervades the mind of the average Indian. People in the country believe that giving a transgender money is a good deed and that a curse from them can bode evil. Which is why, an Indian would rather donate money to a fully able-bodied young transgender than a disabled old man. And this has encouraged some people to disguise as ‘hijras’ and earn a quick buck from the general public.
A lot of heterosexual men, who have never struggled with their sexual identity, have taken to disguising themselves as a transgender, to earn money and sometimes to even harass people. And these pseudo-transgender men are kicking the real transgenders in their stomach, affecting not just their means of livelihood but also their reputation.
In the video, one can discern the transgender's rage, while this sort of violence should be shunned, the video highlights the problem of conmen taking the Indian public for a ride.
