Telangana inks pact to buy power from Chhattisgarh
Telangana State will get 1,000 mw of power from Chhattisgarh
Hyderabad: Telangana State will get 1,000 mw of power from Chhattisgarh from September 2016. A power purchase agreement between the governments of the two states was signed on Tuesday. As per the PPA, TS will pay Rs 4 per unit and the total cost of power, including transmission and distribution loss of 90 paisa to one rupee per unit, would come to around Rs 5 per unit.
The PPAs were signed by Chhattisgarh Power Distribution Company MD Ankit Anand and Telangana Central Power Distribution Company MD Raghuma Reddy in the presence of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao at the CM’s camp office here. Mr Raghuma Reddy told this newspaper that at present, the state has 6,300 mw of power at its disposal and there were no power cuts. “This means the demand is around 6,300 mw. We generate 2,100 mw, get 2,000 mw from NTPC and make short-term purchases of 2,000 mw. By October, we will have about 7,000 mw. There have been no power cuts in the state since November 20, last year,” he said.
Asked for the reason in opting power from Chhattisgarh, he said it was cheaper compared to others. “Chhattisgarh government has offered power at the rate of Rs 4 per unit and if we added T&D loss of 90 paisa to Re 1, it comes to Rs 5 per unit, where we are purchasing power from other producers at the rate of Rs 5.50 to Rs 6.50 per unit. We will save good amount,” Mr Raguma Reddy said. The power lines would be ready by next year and Chhattisgarh would supply from September next, he added.
Mr Chandrasekhar Rao had called on his Chhattisgarh counterpart Raman Singh and signed a MoU for purchase of power on November 3 last year. The present PPA will be valid for 12 years.
